Planning a gaming PC build is exciting, but it’s easy to end up with parts that don’t fit or don’t work together. Before you buy anything, run through this checklist. It covers the compatibility mistakes we see most often in our Dublin workshop.
1. Set your budget and target
Decide what games you want to play, at what resolution and frame rate. A 1080p esports machine needs very different parts to a 1440p or 4K rig. As a rough rule, the graphics card deserves the biggest share of a gaming budget.
2. CPU and motherboard socket
Your processor and motherboard must use the same socket and a compatible chipset. Check the motherboard’s CPU support list, and whether it needs a BIOS update for newer processors.
3. RAM type and speed
Motherboards support either DDR4 or DDR5, not both. Buy the type your board supports, ideally as a matched kit of two sticks, and check the board’s memory compatibility list. Getting this wrong is one of the most common build delays we see.
4. Graphics card size and power
Modern GPUs can be very long and thick. Check the card’s length against your case’s maximum GPU clearance, and check which power connectors it needs.
5. Power supply
Don’t cheap out on the PSU. Choose a reputable brand with enough wattage for your CPU and GPU plus some headroom, and the right connectors for your graphics card.
6. Storage
An NVMe SSD for Windows and your main games makes a big difference to load times. Check how many M.2 slots your motherboard has.
7. Cooling and case airflow
Make sure your CPU cooler supports your socket and fits under the side panel, or that the case has room for your radiator. A case with good front intake and a couple of fans will keep everything cooler and quieter.
8. Don’t forget the small things
- A Windows licence and a USB stick to install it
- Wi-Fi on the motherboard, or a separate adapter, if you can’t use a cable
- Enough fan headers and USB headers for your case
